It has to be impossible, right? That the United States had a scientist at the secret Soviet launch site near Baikonur for almost nine years? What happened to the Cold War? What happened to the Space Race?
Maybe newspaper and magazine reporters and TV media were never told. Certainly Congress was never told that we had a man in the USSR. Those blabbermouts would have leaked the information as the ink dried on their confidentiality statements.
But it happened. Grudgingly, US agencies have released small bits of information that supported the story a dying space medicine scientist told the author in 2002. He was a friend, an inventive scientist and a true American hero.
His story will be out soon in the tenth Thomas S. Fiske book.
